On a warm summers evening, Blyth turned their own form of heat on neighbours Ashington at Croft Park and cruised to a 4-0 victory.

They went ahead in the tenth minute when Jamie Holmes found Ian Watson on the left flank and when he crossed, Sean Reid’s bullet-like diving header from six yards gave ex Spartans ‘keeper Conor Grant no chance. Holmes – outstanding on the night - smashed an effort against the bar before the newcomer produced an unerring finish from 16 yards to double the lead in the 25th minute. Gerrard Richardson missed out at the far post from a Kyle Downey corner which represented Ashington’s first opportunity then Bradley Fewster dribbled the ball around Grant but saw his effort deflected behind for a corner by Ryan Bell. On 33 minutes, Tony Stephenson had a great chance after shrugging off the challenge by a defender but with only ‘keeper Pete Jameson to beat, his weak effort was held by the custodian. As half time approached, a delightful pass from Nathan Buddle opened Ashington up again but Reid’s nonchalant chip around Grant, drifted wide. The final chance came seconds before the adjournment as ex Spartan Matty Wade slipped the ball through for Stephenson who saw his goalbound left footer turned over by Jameson. Two goals in three second half minutes by Fewster took Spartans into a 4-0 lead. The striker lashed home in the 58th minute after work by Holmes then calmly slotted in with his right foot as Grant advanced. The pace of the game dipped for the last 20 minutes but near the end, Ashington almost opened their account when a cross-cum-shot from the left by the impressive Jermaine Francois skimmed the bar. Spartans racked up a plethora of chances on the night and could have won by a much greater margin but the plucky Colliers will nevertheless be pleased with their workout.
