Striker Michael Chilton helped to put the skids under Ashington - one of his former clubs – on Saturday as Seaham Red Star took maximum points with a late goals surge at Woodhorn Lane.

In a game sadly lacking in quality, the Colliers had got their noses in front through a superb Thomas Kalthoeber effort – but the prolific Chilton levelled ten minutes later with a stunning free-kick. In the dying minutes, substitute David Robinson and Dan Wilson both struck to condemn the Wansbeck outfit to a fifth consecutive league defeat. Following his sides 5-0 drubbing the previous week against Billingham Town, Ashington boss Ian Skinner drafted seasoned campaigner James Harmison into the centre of defence and the plan appeared to have had the desired effect until the visitors netted three times in the closing 20 minutes. The first half was virtually a non event with chances few and far between. Early doors, Sean McRoberts tried to curl a right footer from distance which drifted wide of Adam McHugh’s post but it was just past the half hour mark when the next opportunity arose with Wilson firing across goal. Ashington’s first attempt came in the 41st minute - Brandon Slater having a shot blocked in the area but after McHugh had been called into action to field an effort by Wilson, the Colliers ought to have gone in front with only seconds of the opening half remaining. Slater’s diagonal run from left to right saw him lay the ball off to Callum Johnston but the striker snatched at the opportunity and lashed over the bar. The pattern for the second half was similar until Thomas Kalthoeber broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. The defender met a cross from the right and hooked home on the turn with his effort finding the far corner. Two minutes later, Chilton fired a warning flicking wide of the upright from the edge of the area but in the 72nd minute, his accuracy was impeccable. The striker curled a 20 yards free-kick around the defensive wall and into the top corner leaving McHugh helpless. Cue a Seaham bombardment as Roberts cut inside and drove just over; Wilson had a header brilliantly tipped over by McHugh then from an identical position to the one which resulted in the equaliser, another Chilton effort was goalbound until McHugh magnificently pushed the ball onto the post. Ashington had skipper Curtis Coppen sin binned before Karl Ross was not far away with a shot from the edge of the area. A draw appeared to be the likely outcome but in the 87th minute following a corner on the left, the unmarked Robinson put the visitors in front and with the last kick of the game, Wilson made it 3-1 chipping over the advancing McHugh.
