Ashington have given themselves a chance of qualifying for the next stages of the Mitre Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup after hitting double figures against Esh Winning at the WindowsPlusRoofs Arena on Wednesday night.

The Colliers went into the game knowing that a victory was essential - and they emphatically swept the County Durham outfit aside with a ruthless display of finishing. Callum Johnston and Dylan Williamson led the way with both claiming hat tricks whilst Dan Taggart and Damien Stevens hit a brace a piece.

The result equalled Ashington’s 10-1 victory over Newton Aycliffe in a Ebac Northern League match at Woodhorn Lane four seasons ago. Inside the opening minutes, an attempted clearance by home ‘keeper Craig Hannant rebounded off the back of Williamson and went out for a corner and from the flag kick, ex Ashington striker Channon North cleared the ball off the line. Taggart shot wide before the floodgates opened with the Wansbeck side netting four in a ten minutes spell. In the seventh minute, Johnston beat the offside trap and drove a right footer across Hannant and inside the far post. Jay McLean fired wide for Esh but Ashington’s response was to add a second on 11 minutes when Taggart latched onto a cross from Stevens and turned sharply before firing in. The third arrived following neat play involving Karl Ross and Taggart, the latter laying the ball into the path of Williamson who found the bottom corner and within sixty seconds, Taggart seized on a defensive error, rounded Hannant and played the ball across for Johnston to tap home from close range. On the half hour, Adam McHugh made an excellent double save before Taggart turned and lashed in left footed for goal number five. The sixth came in the 37th minute when Williamson slipped a pass through for Stevens who drove the ball just inside the far post. Barrie Smith dipped a long range effort narrowly over before Esh got a goal back on the stroke of half time with North clipping home and punishing the Colliers for a defensive error. Shortly after the interval, Matthew Allison and North squandered good opportunities for the home side then after Stevens was through but saw his shot blocked by Hannant, Ashington added a seventh. Taggart and Stevens produced good work and when the former laid the ball back, Williamson coolly took a touch then rifled in. On the hour it was eight as Williamson found Stevens and the striker swept the ball home wide of Hannant and just inside the far post. On 77 minutes, substitute Lewis Robson fed Stevens down the flank and when he crossed, Johnston completed his hat-trick hammering home. Eight minutes from time, the visitors hit double figures with Williamson also grabbing his third of the night, firing in on the turn.
