Ashington CFC are putting the final touches to a project which will hopefully see the re-launch of a reserve outfit next season.
Club Chairman Brian Shotton broke the news to supporters at a fans forum on Saturday and said: “We will applying to a local league and the team will play out of Woodhorn Lane, so having an Ashington side would give the public the opportunity to watch a game every week. First and foremost, we are looking at basically bridging the gap between juniors and seniors by forming a development squad which would see us get a reserve team back out on the pitch.”
He continued: “With that in mind, the club would invite expressions of interest from anybody with aspirations to be the manager or head coach of the reserve team - with applications to the football club.”
The previous reserve side - under the name of Ashington Colliers – played in the premier division of the Northern Alliance League for many years until they tendered their resignation at the end of last season.
