– But it's no holiday
By Brian Bennett
Ashington FC manager Steve Bowey took his players to the beach on Friday – but it was not for a relaxing break.
Instead the sweat poured out of Bowey’s revamped squad as they did there second training session after reporting back in midweek ahead of the opening friendly away to Gretna on Friday (July 6) which has a 7.45pm kick-off. Bowey said: “The lads have put a lot of miles in. We have four weeks before the start of the season but our first two sessions have gone really well. The thought process behind taking them down to Blyth beach was two-fold - a different venue and different scenery - and to be fair it was excellent with the lads thoroughly enjoying it.”
He continued: “I’m really looking forward to our game at Gretna – it will bring us all together. It’s going to be hard but nevertheless a good test and I hope there is a decent attendance. They (Gretna) were flying a few years ago but are in the process of rebuilding and have just signed a few players from Queen of the South so they are going to be strong.”
Bowey’s squad will include some triallists: “We will have a look at them,” he said, “I will then have a good gauge as to how they perform by next week. I have been speaking to a couple of scouts and I’ve had an agent on the phone over the weekend offering a couple of players so I’ve been really busy.
We have got another couple of training sessions before the Gretna game and overall, things are going really well.”
Ashington will travel to face West Allotment Celtic on Wednesday (July 11, kick-off 7.30pm) for their second friendly.
