Ashington FC chairman Brian Shotton paid a glowing and heartfelt tribute to the club’s supporters on Saturday following the Colliers’ clash against Ryhope CW at Woodhorn Lane.
The Wansbeck side’s poor run of results continued with a 2-1 defeat in front of a crowd of 224 and Mr Shotton said: “Obviously I’d like us to get better results on the pitch but it’s refreshing that people have stuck by the club and the team considering the season which we have had. It’s been difficult and we haven’t given them much to shout about at the Lane having won only one home game since early October. The fans are certainly not taken for granted and I’d like to thank each and every one of them because their support helps us. The way results have been going for us it’s encouraging to see them turning up and creating a positive atmosphere. Our average attendance for league matches this season is 205 and that delights me. There is so much hard work going on behind the scenes at the club and it is fabulous to get the support we do. We have a big game against Whitley Bay on Saturday (March 16) – the start of three clashes at home on consecutive Saturdays - and if possible, I’d like to keep the 200 plus crowds going until the end of the season.”
