COLLIERS CLASH FORCED OFF AFTER MONSOON
By Brian Bennett
A mid afternoon monsoon forced Ashington’s away match against Sunderland Ryhope CW on Saturday to be postponed less than an hour before kick off.
The pitch at the Recreation ground had passed a noon inspection by match referee Martin Conroy but the heavy downpour of rain and sleet which slanted down led to a thumbs down decision from the Peterlee based official: “The pitch was playable at noon - but I did say at the time that if there was further rain, it could lead to the game being postponed,” said Mr Conroy, “Consequently after a prolonged spell of inclement weather, when I made another inspection just past 2pm, there were pools of water on the surface which led to my decision.”
A new date has been set and the Colliers will now travel to face Ryhope CW on Tuesday March 31. It was the second consecutive week that Ian Skinner’s outfit were left to kick their heels after their home clash with Guisborough the previous Saturday was also a victim of the wet weather. The match against the Teessiders has been rescheduled for Tuesday April 7.
Ashington prepare for back to back home matches against Northallerton Town (Saturday February 29, 3pm kick off) and Sunderland RCA (Tuesday March 3, 7.30pm kick off).
Lewis Robson and David Edwards remain sidelined whilst Max Emmerson and Dylan Williamson face fitness tests.
