Ashington FC’s Conor Grant turned in an unbelievable goalkeeping display in the 1-1 draw against Newcastle Benfield on Saturday – and afterwards the stopper revealed just what pumped him up: “The previous week, I missed out as I was attending my sisters wedding,” said Whitehaven-born Grant, “I thought I was quite fortunate to get straight back into the side because I had heard that Luc Glasper - who took over in goal - had played well against Shildon and the team got a good result. Therefore I felt I had to try and justify the manager’s decision. As a side we dug in and for us to come away with a point considering we didn’t play very well overall was good.”

Bowey later labelled Grant’s display as being ‘one of the best he had seen by a goalkeeper for a long, long time,’ and Wallsend-based Grant – a civil servant - was happy with his own performance: “Today has to be up there with the best,” he said, “I’ve maybes had a few games like this in the past where we have lost two or three nil and it’s all been in vain but fortunately today we got a point and it mattered. After the first half, I was hoping I wasn’t going to be as busy in the second period and I wasn’t. I’m an experienced keeper now who trains hard and I set myself high standards and try to be the best I can. It’s nice to hear the manager’s comments and it’s for other people to say really because I don’t study other ‘keepers too much and just concentrate on myself. I’m only 28 years old and ‘keepers can go on playing until they are in their forties so I just want to keep doing well and to turn in more performances like I have done today if and when called upon to do so.”
