Harmison: Harmison: "We have got to get the basics right"

By Brian Bennett

Steve Harmison said his outfit have got to get the basics of football right ahead of the new campaign which starts early next month. Harmison who alongside Tom Wade are joint managers at Ashington FC – was speaking after the 3-2 defeat against AFC Newbiggin at the Hirst Welfare on Monday night. The home side led twice through Kyle Downey (penalty) and Dale Pearson but Ryan McKee and John Wyres levelled before Jordan Wright scored a late winner. Harmison said: “With no disrespect to Newbiggin, we treat this as a training game whereas it was like a cup final for them. I was disappointed with the effort and the smartness of our players because it wasn’t really there. We had key lads missing in the midfield but I thought we missed chance after chance and it was similar to last season. However, we’ve never really been hung up on results. No one got carried away when we played and beat the Colliers last week because the whole exercise of warm up games for us is about getting players back on the park and them listening to Tom Wade’s voice.” He continued: “What we have to do is to make sure the next time we play – away to Bedlington on Friday night – that we get better. This has been the worst experience for us over the 10-12 days of pre season. We didn’t start well tonight - Newbiggin got a foothold - and they had three or four chances and scored their goals. What we have got to do is to get the basics and simple things right. We conceded a couple of sloppy goals and allowed a team who worked harder than us the opportunity to get into the game. We did play some nice football - but also made some silly mistakes.”
