Ashington FC joint manager Steve Harmison has paid tribute to Newcastle United – and St James’ Park legend Peter Beardsley - after the Magpies agreed to send a side up to Woodhorn Lane ahead of the forthcoming season. The friendly will take place on Tuesday August 1 with a 7.30pm kick off and Harmison said: “Newcastle are in a tournament in Whitby the weekend beforehand but Peter [Beardsley] has come back to me and said he will bring his lads up on the Tuesday which I think is great. Obviously I have got close connections with Newcastle United and they have done me a huge favour.” He added: “It’s fantastic that Newcastle United are putting themselves in the community and hopefully the game will attract a good crowd and bring in some revenue for the club.”

Meanwhile supporters will see one notable change at Woodhorn Lane with the dugouts being switched across to the new stand: “It makes things easier for everyone,” said Harmison, “We have a nice new building and don’t want to trample mud through the facility so it makes sense. Hopefully it will also bring us better luck than last year!”
