Ashington FC’s interim boss Ian Skinner – who watched his outfit slide to a narrow 2-1 home defeat against Ryhope CW on Saturday – nevertheless raised a glass to toast Sammy Pérez after the recent newcomer had netted his first goal for the club.
With his brother Ayoze scoring a brace for Newcastle United who overcame a 2-0 deficit before claiming a thrilling 3-2 victory over Everton at St James’ Park, Skinner was convinced their would be celebrations in the Pérez family home: “Sammy (Pérez) got off the mark for us and his goal was a good finish,” said Skinner, “It was one of those horrible ones to watch - an under hit back pass which put him clean through about 28-30 yards from goal. The Ryhope ‘keeper (Joe Atkinson) is a big lad and is coming close to him and he’s getting bigger and bigger - but we know all about Sammy. Technically he’s very good and he showed his strength and technique to place the ball to the side of the ‘keeper - and we’ve seen his celebration somewhere before because it’s very similar to the one used by his brother Ayoze who puts his fingers in his ears.”
He continued: “I was delighted for Sammy – he’s got ability and he is tired after working very hard so full credit to him. It’ll be a happy Pérez household because Ayoze has scored twice today so the brothers have got a hat-trick between themselves.”
