Ashington AFC are proud to announce another huge step forward for the club by offering youth football provision with the launch of ‘Ashington AFC Juniors’ from next season (19/20).
Ashington AFC Juniors will build upon the provision already provided by the club via our first team and reserve team squads.
The aim is for Ashington AFC Juniors to provide a thriving junior section, with the aim to provide playing opportunities from u5’s, with teams from U7 through to U18 providing direct links into the senior teams.
Ashington AFC Juniors, which will sit within the overall club structure, which will enable the club to provide a clear pathway for local talent to flourish whilst wearing the Ashington AFC badge and colours.
The creation of Ashington AFC Juniors will see the club invest a significant amount of time and resource into the development of youth football across the local community. The town and surrounding areas are a hotbed of youth football and it has long been an ambition of Ashington AFC to develop a youth section as part of a one club structure. This will see the club not only support grassroots football in the local community but it will also nurture talent with the view to developing our own future first team players.
Ashington AFC Juniors will offer fun, high-quality, age-appropriate coaching and footballing opportunities with the objective of developing each player to be the best they can be. Ashington AFC Juniors will provide players structured, competitive football, appropriate to all ability levels played in a safe and friendly environment. The club will be non-selective, meaning we will support all levels and abilities, although squads will be structured so that players are matched with players of similar ability.
Speaking about the new junior section, Ashington AFC Chairman Brian Shotton said: “We are hugely excited about this next stage in the development of Ashington AFC. It is hoped it will transform the club into one of the largest community sports clubs in the local area, offering football for adult and junior teams representing the club from the beginning of next season. This approach is aligned with the club’s commitment to maximise the range of opportunities for all to enjoy football and be active. Ashington AFC Juniors will be an integral part of Ashington AFC giving players and coaches clear pathways and development opportunities in football. Our ambition is to develop a comprehensive and sustainable approach to local junior football, which enhances participation opportunities for every young person from Ashington and the surrounding areas wanting to play football. This approach will enable the club to benefit from the experience and commitment of the many volunteers already working within junior football, as well as anyone who would like to get involved. It will also help us develop a structured approach that will hopefully enable us to develop players for the first team over the coming years, as well as developing coaches with potential to promote from within if any vacancy arises. In addition further opportunities to remain within the game will be available whether it be as a player, coach, referee, administrator or volunteer helping the club to overcoming some of the wider challenges of running a sports clubs.
The club will look to draw upon the experience of our 1st team manager Ian Skinner, who has worked full time within football development for the past 17 years, currently working for both The FA as an Affiliate Tutor and the local County FA. Ian has taken a lead on ensuring the club offer a full player pathway from grassroots to the first team, which has led to the formation of our new junior section. Ian will be responsible for and lead on the development of all football across the whole club. ”
