A jubilant Lee Scott was quick to acknowledge that the three points for Ashington was the most important thing above his brace against Seaham Red Star on Saturday: “The win is the most important thing today, as the last two results have been a bit disappointing, but the lads were training on Thursday and working on keeping the ball in those conditions” he said.
Before the game there was a sudden downfall of rain from about 2pm, which thanks to the work of several volunteers in the hour running up to the game, meant that unlike some other games in the Northern League, the match went ahead. “The pitch was muddy and wet” Lee acknowledged “but it’s one of those games that you thoroughly enjoy playing in. A lot of the lads prefer those conditions with a slickness on the pitch and I’d take those conditions any day of the week instead of hard bobbly pitch or even a 3G surface”.
Lee who has played for Ashington on several occasions over the past 10 years signed back for the Colliers in December following a period away from the game whilst recovering from an operation. “Bowsa [Steve Bowey] and Macca [Gareth McAlindon] have been brilliant with me since coming back from my operation, and whilst it's been difficult when games have been called off, the training has been great and helped get me back to the level I know I can play at.” He continued “I’ve still got a a bit to go to get some sharpness back, but I'm looking forward to a good pre-season and once I get myself back to where I was, I know I can be an asset for the club.”
