COLLIERS PREPARE FOR JOURNEY INTO THE UNKNOWN!
By Brian Bennett
Ashington go on a journey into the unknown when they face North West Counties League Division One North outfit Nelson in their rescheduled Buildbase FA Vase second qualifying round tie on Saturday.
Although the two clubs met each other a couple of seasons ago in the same competition – the Colliers winning 5-0 – first team coach Andy Inness said: “We’ll be trying to find something out about them (Nelson) and have the lads prepared - although it’s quite difficult as Nelson have only played two competitive games to date so it’s hard to try and gauge where they are.”
Ashington will board the coach bound for Lancashire on Saturday morning fresh from their 4-4 draw against Whitley Bay on Tuesday night which ended their run of six consecutive victories. After going ahead late in the game at Hillheads, the Colliers conceded an equaliser barely a minute later and Inness said: “It’s a long trip for us and we’ll be looking for a reaction from the lads following Tuesday night’s performance because all over the pitch they didn’t reach the same levels of the last six games.”
Inness added “Ben Sampson is ruled out of the clash after suffering a recurrence of his hamstring injury at Whitley Bay whilst Bobby Taylor’s fitness will be assessed. David Luke was expected to train tonight (Thursday) and then we’ll make a judgement on him.”
He concluded: “For any player not included in the 11 at the moment, it’s a difficult job to get in because the team – apart from Tuesday’s disappointing result at Whitley Bay - are doing well. However what we do have in the dressing room is a squad of players who are all pulling in the right direction and long may that continue.”
The winners of Saturday’s clash will travel to face Charnock Richard in the first round proper a fortnight later (October 31).
