SKINNER: “IT WAS NICE TO GET BACK TO PLAYING FOOTBALL AGAIN”
By Brian Bennett
Ashington FC manager Ian Skinner said it was nice to get back to playing football again - after his squad had played their first warm up match against Ebac Northern League second division side Birtley Town on Saturday.
The Colliers trailed 2-0 at the interval but hit back in the second period and ran out 6-3 winners with goals from Dean Briggs (2), Bobby Taylor (2), Luke Heppell and Paul Robinson: “It was a good exercise and a good work out,” said Skinner afterwards, “We had the luxury of a big squad which allowed us to field a different eleven for the second half. Every one did well – but it was just nice to get back to playing football again after the pandemic.”
He enthused: “We managed to give four of our under 19 players the opportunity to see what they could do and they all performed admirably and should be pleased with their dispalys. One of the four - Luke Heppell an under 18 – got onto the score sheet so I was delighted for him that he notched his first goal in senior football.”
He went on: “Overall I was really pleased with the condition of the players and credit to them for maintaining fitness levels whilst it was pleasing that the goals were spread around.”
Ashington will train twice this week before they host Percy Main Amateurs on Saturday (July 10) at the dwmedia Stadium (3pm kick-off): “We’ll utilise the same squad and look to adopt a similar approach - then review things as to what we do moving forward,” added the boss.
